International Women's Day

International Women's Day began in 1910 in order to honor women and to voice their rights.  Today, women's issues are just as relevant - and so every year on March 8th, we come together to celebrate, connect and share inspirational stories of women around the world.

At Angela Friedman lingerie, we want to especially commemorate the stories of women who influence and inspire us.  For a fun twist, here's a new pairing... Along with each extraordinary woman's story, we've listed the lingerie pieces that would help bring out her unique style and personality!

AMELIA EARHART

In the 1920s and 30s, Amelia Earhart showed us that the modern woman could be both courageous and independent.  Although she wanted to be a pilot, she was faced by prejudicial and financial challenges.  Undeterred, she saved up for flight lessons and would soon become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932.  She is quoted as having said “Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.”  In 1937, she chose to attempt to be the first woman to fly around the world.  Unfortunately this was her final flight as she disappeared soon after... But Amelia's courage, persistence, and groundbreaking achievements live on.

Jean Yu                                                                    Angela Friedman
We imagine Amelia wearing vintage lingerie styles that would fit her fast-paced lifestyle.  She would wear sleek and streamlined styles, always in natural fibers for comfort and movement.  Amelia's undergarments, whether from Jean Yu or Angela Friedman, would always show her confidence and strength.

MARY TYLER MOORE

Mary Tyler Moore has been one of the best known names in the entertainment industry for a half a century now, and her more recent charitable work has kept her in the spotlight and in our hearts.  This Hollywood "it girl" won us over with the Dick Van Dyke show and the Mary Tyler Moore show and has continued to inspire us since.  She is the now the International Chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and has supported and founded a number of organizations involving animal rights, pet adoption, historical sites, and stem cell research.  "Take chances, make mistakes. That's how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave."

VPL                                                Fortnight
Who could forget her classic mod style from the 1970s?  We think that several modern brands evoke Mary's style with their colorblocking, strong lines, and bold colors, including VPL, Araks, and Fortnight.

OPRAH WINFREY

Though Oprah Winfrey grew up in poverty, her big dreams and strong desire to learn have led her to become the greatest African-American philanthropist in US history. “Books were my pass to personal freedom. I learned to read at age 3, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi.” After enduring many hardships as a child, she began her career as a news anchor. The Oprah Winfrey show began in 1986 and quickly became the #1 daytime talk show in America.   Her empathy, humor, and honesty have made her a role model and icon to millions. Now Oprah gives back to society in countless ways through charity, voicing out on important and controversial issues, and encouraging women to see their own potential.
We envision Oprah wearing lingerie that focuses on comfort, soft fabrics, and styles that allow women to feel comfortable in their own skin.  Eberjey is a natural fit because their lounge wear is so stylish while still maintaining a timeless appeal- just like Oprah.

KATE MIDDLETON

How could we not include the Duchess of Cambridge in our list of inspirational women?  Kate Middleton is a sweetheart on the global stage, winning us over with her down-to-earth attitude and impeccable style.  Though she wasn't born into the British aristocracy, she has taken to her new position with grace and confidence, traits which we can all aspire to!  Especially since the royal wedding in April 2011, she has focused strongly on charitable work in areas such as arts, children's organizations, conservation, and the elderly.  Asked about her glamorous new life, she responded simply, "I'm still very much Kate," which shows so clearly how grounded she really is.

Jenny Packham                 Angela Friedman                     Cake Lingerie
Kate Middleton is a classic beauty, so we envision her wearing timeless styles in silk and lace from Angela Friedman and Jenny Packham.  Since she's currently expecting, we also wanted to point out some maternity styles from one of our favorite brands, Cake Lingerie.  All of these pieces are definitely fit for a Duchess.

BRIGITTE BARDOT

Brigitte Bardot's career spanned dance, modeling, film, and music - and all before she retired at only 38!  Since then, she has used her fame to raise awareness for animal rights, starting the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals. Brigitte even went so far as to auction off many of her personal belongings and jewelry to raise 4 million francs for the start of the foundation.  She has used her fame and influence to fight seal hunts, killing of dolphins and whales, consumption of horse meats, bullfighting, and more. She has definitely aged with grace, saying “What could be more beautiful than a dear old lady growing wise with age? Every age can be enchanting, provided you live within it.”
Fraulein Kink                       Bordelle                     Kiki de Montparnasse
Brigitte Bardot's lingerie will definitely be the raciest on our list!  She's famous for her beautiful body, confident demeanor, and comfort with herself.  So what better option than a saucy number by Bordelle, Fraulein Kink, or Kiki de Montparnasse?

I hope you've enjoyed reading about these 5 extraordinary women!  Which other women would you have added to the list?  I'd love to hear in the comments below!

Wishing you silk, lace, and all things lovely on this International Women's Day,
Angela

  1. So nice! I really enjoyed seeing how you related the pieces to the women. I'd probably have chosen some more pink to Bardot, but your choices fit perfectly!
