Style icon: Marie Antoinette

Say what you will about the Archduchess of Austria, but you have to admit that woman had style.  In the first of a series we're doing on stylish women throughout history (and the lingerie to suit them, of course!), I couldn't help but select Marie Antoinette as a classy (classist?) broad.  Whether or not she suggested they eat cake is up for debate, but her influence is unavoidable.

She rocked the robe a la polonaise (all the rage when she came to power) and the muslin chemise (of her own doing) equally well, the latter causing exceptional outrage due to the fact that fine muslin was manufactured in Italy and not France.  Her yearning for a simpler life (!!!) changed women's fashions forever and ushered in a new age of neoclassical dress for the first several decades of the nineteenth century.

(The evolution of her style shows progress towards softer silhouettes and less rigid undergarments.)

Though she never saw her 38th birthday, Marie inadvertently shifted women's fashion away from the 300-year-old flattened and conical silhouette of the time into an age where breasts could assume the more natural rounded shape of the 1800s and beyond.  (This basic hourglass shape that began to evolve during her life has yet to fall out of fashion in the West, aside from two brief periods of rest in the 1920s and 1960s.)

And who could forget Sofia Coppola's interpretation of the young Marie Antoinette, played so beautifully by Kirsten Dunst?  What beauty, what torment, what clothing!
